PHP and MySQL Everyday Apps For Dummies is a one-stop reference providing all you need to build dynamic, real-world, ready-to-use apps with the popular PHP (a scripting language) and MySQL (a database system) software. The book is a hands-on, go-to-guide that

  • Walks you through installing the applications files from the CD-ROM and setting up your programming environment
  • Contains all the code needed to create seven applications:
  • User authentication with HTTP
  • User login
  • On-line catalog
  • Shopping cart
  • Content management system
  • Web forum
  • Building and managing a mailing list (on the CD-ROM)
  • Automates the programming process and walks you through building the application from start to finish
  • Explains how to write secure code
  • Features complete code—not just snippets, but neatly assembled packages with “instant” real-world functionality
  • Shows how to build the applications in two forms -- procedural and object-oriented programming -- providing programmers who want to switch to the object-oriented method of coding (which is new in PHP 5!) with the essential know-how
  • Includes a companion CD-ROM that contains every line of code in the applications from the book plus a bonus chapter that shows how to build a mailing list

Information on each application includes a discussion of issues, structure of the database, code listings, and an explanation of the code. You can use these applications as is, modify them for use on your Web site, or build your own application using techniques described. If you want real-world Web apps you can use right away, this is the book for you.

If you want to add more power and functionality to your Web sites, add some database applications like a powerful shopping cart or a fun quiz game. Such applications make your site more dynamic, allow you to gather information, and provide customized experiences for your visitors.

Creating Database Web Applications with PHP and ASP teaches beginning and intermediate designers the fundamentals of creating complex Web applications. By covering both open source (PHP/MySQL) and proprietary tools (Microsoft ASP and Access), readers gain insight to the strengths and weaknesses of each. In addition, they learn how to work with both sets of tools and determine which works best for their projects. Practical examples, including a shopping cart and quiz show, are used to teach the basic concepts behind creating and testing database code. Every example is also provided in both PHP and ASP for easy comparison and use. With the knowledge and experience gained here, beginners will learn the fundamental concepts behind these two technologies, while more experienced developers will learn which technology works best for their specific needs. Exercises, questions, and projects are included with each chapter.

  • Gain a thorough understanding of mashup fundamentals
  • Clear, detailed walk-through of the key PHP mashup building technologies
  • Five fully implemented example mashups with full code

In Detail

A mashup is a web page or application that combines data from two or more external online sources into an integrated experience. This book is your entryway to the world of mashups and Web 2.0. You will create PHP projects that grab data from one place on the Web, mix it up with relevant information from another place on the Web and present it in a single application.

This book is made up of five real-world PHP projects. Each project begins with an overview of the technologies and protocols needed for the project, and then dives straight into the tools used and details of creating the project:

  • Look up products on Amazon.Com from their code in the Internet UPC database
  • A fully customized search engine with MSN Search and Yahoo!
  • A personal video jukebox with YouTube and Last.FM
  • Deliver real-time traffic incident data via SMS and the California Highway Patrol!
  • Display pictures sourced from Flickr in Google maps

All the mashup applications used in the book are built upon free tools and are thoroughly explained. You will find all the source code used to build the mashups used in this book in the code download section for this book.

What you will learn from this book?

You will learn how to write PHP code to remotely consume services like Google Maps, Flickr, Amazon, YouTube, MSN Search, Yahoo!, Last.fm, and the Internet UPC Database, not to mention the California Highway Patrol Traffic data! You will also learn about the technologies, data formats, and protocols needed to use these web services and APIs, and some of the freely-available PHP tools for working with them.
You will understand how these technologies work with each other and see how to use this information, in combination with your imagination, to build your own cutting-edge websites.

Approach

This book is a practical tutorial with five detailed and carefully explained case studies to build new and effective mashup applications.

Who this book is written for?

If you feel confident with your PHP programming, familiar with the basics of HTML and CSS, unafraid of XML, and interested in mashing things up, this is the book for you!

There are a lot of formats and protocols, web services and web APIs encountered in this book -- you do not need to know anything about them or about AJAX; you will find all you need in the book.
