About
Envoy is a high-performance, open-source edge and service proxy designed for cloud-native applications and large microservice "service mesh" architectures.
It provides advanced L4/L7 load balancing, HTTP/2 and gRPC proxying, service discovery integration, observability with distributed tracing and rich metrics, and dynamic configuration via xDS APIs.
Istio is an open-source service mesh that secures, connects, and monitors services in Kubernetes, virtual machines, and multi-cloud environments.
It can run with Envoy proxies injected into each service or in a proxy-free ambient mode, and provides canary releases, load balancing, circuit breakers, mutual TLS authentication, and observability through metrics, logs, and distributed traces for Prometheus and
Grafana.
