🆚 Istio vs. Nginx

Istio is an open-source service mesh that secures, connects, and monitors services in Kubernetes, virtual machines, and multi-cloud environments.

It can run with Envoy proxies injected into each service or in a proxy-free ambient mode, and provides canary releases, load balancing, circuit breakers, mutual TLS authentication, and observability through metrics, logs, and distributed traces for Prometheus and Grafana.

Nginx is a lightweight, high-performance open-source HTTP server and reverse proxy designed for handling large volumes of concurrent connections with low memory usage.

It supports serving static files, reverse proxying, load balancing for HTTP, TCP, and UDP traffic, SSL/TLS termination with SNI, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3, WebSocket proxying, response compression, and zero-downtime configuration reloads.
