🆚 Amazon API Gateway vs. Istio

Amazon API Gateway is a fully managed AWS service that acts as an entry point for applications to access backend services such as Lambda functions, EC2 workloads, or any HTTP endpoint.

It routes and throttles API traffic, enforces authorization through IAM, Amazon Cognito, and Lambda authorizers, monitors performance with CloudWatch and X-Ray, supports canary releases and response streaming, and exposes REST APIs as MCP tools for AI agents.

Istio is an open-source service mesh that secures, connects, and monitors services in Kubernetes, virtual machines, and multi-cloud environments.

It can run with Envoy proxies injected into each service or in a proxy-free ambient mode, and provides canary releases, load balancing, circuit breakers, mutual TLS authentication, and observability through metrics, logs, and distributed traces for Prometheus and Grafana.
