Microformats

San Francisco, California, United States

Microformats (ΞΌF) are a set of standardized HTML class names and attributes used to embed descriptive metadata within existing page content for entities such as people, events, reviews, and blog posts.

The original Microformats v1 specification defined formats such as hCard for people and organizations, hCalendar for events, hReview for reviews, hRecipe for recipes, and hProduct for commerce data, using conventional HTML class attributes.

Google previously supported Microformats for rich snippets in search results, but their current support status is uncertain because Google Search Central documentation now lists only JSON-LD, Microdata, and RDFa among its supported structured data formats.

According to our data, Microformats is the 8th most popular semantic markup technology on the web.
It has 4.9% of the semantic markup market share and is detected on 3.5% of all websites.
